Blogging the Book: "Roses for English Gardens" by Gertrude Jekyll and Edward Mawley

Roses for English Gardens" by Gertrude Jekyll and Edward Mawley was published by Country Life (the English magazine) as part of their Country Life Library series in 1902.

It is one of the great books on roses. To bring it to a still wider audience I am going to blog the entire book as a series of extracts over the coming 6 months. Because of its great age there are no copyright issues; because of Gertrude Jekyll's genius it is timeless. As an experiment in "book blogging" I'm not sure how it will go, or how many people will follow the blog. We will see.

Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) was a garden designer and garden writer of enormous influence, and her name is often associated with that of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Jekyll’s co-author, Edward Mawley (a founder of the Royal National Rose Society) offers more technical advice on growing roses in the later part of the book.
